Salmon

The backbone of the ecosystem.

Salmon are akin to life in the Great Bear Rainforest. They feed not only the people of this coast but also the plants, bears, wolves, birds, and other wildlife of the marine and terrestrial environment. Understanding how salmon populations are doing is therefore critically important to all the work that we do. Tracking population trends in salmon, by counting how many salmon are returning to our rivers to spawn, forms an important component of our investigation into the health of populations of Spirit, black, and grizzly bears.
